Angel Wings Awareness Quilt Story

By: Kimberly Hicks

On April 18, 2005 my life was changed forever. Up until then I had several life changing events: the day Kaydence was born, when we finally decided something was wrong, the day we got the diagnosis of Spinal Muscular Atrophy (that was a big one), the day she held her head up by herself for the first time. Every family of a child with SMA knows these landmarks but this was different. This was the day Kaydence got her wings.

Now, I have never been the kind of person to sit around and wallow in my grief, but I will admit that it sounded like a good idea at the time. That was not to be the case though, because I said those four little words that my family had already come to dread, "I'll make a quilt!"

I decided that because we, Tiffany, Kate, Ray and I, knew of so many families who had lost their babies to SMA that I would make a wall hanging to commemorate the ones we knew. I told me daughters "If I can't find enough people willing to let me use their child's info then we can fill some of the squares with poetry or meaningful sayings." YEAH RIGHT!!!

I am every day amazed at the way so many angels are knocking on my door asking to be included in this project. Some days they show up singly, other days they come in a group of friends. They have visited me from many different cities, states and countries. In some small ways, Kaydence has introduced us to so many friends we would not otherwise have met.

In only a few short months "The Quilt" has gone from being a wall hanging with maybe 20 to 30 squares to "The Angel Wings Awareness Quilt" with 159 angels represented so far and I do not see a stopping point until there is a cure. To raise awareness of this disorder we are looking forward to displaying the quilt at as many fundraisers as we can. Just let us know if you want us to bring it to yours.

Support for this project has come from many different companies and private individuals. We have received donations of many different types ranging from a single angel design to a commercial speed sewing machine to help put it all together.

If you have an angel or know of an angel you want represented on this quilt or if you just want to see what all the fuss is about goto www.kaydence.org. Remember to sign the guestbook. We really do like hearing your comments. If you want to talk to us about coming to your fundraiser or event please Click here
